As a supporter of the MAKEPOVERTYHISTORY Campaign, I am calling on all New Zealand political parties to take action on poverty now.
MAKEPOVERTYHISTORY Aoteaora New Zealand wants urgent and meaningful policy change in three critical and inextricably linked areas: aid, trade, and debt.
We want:
- Trade Justice: In the Pacific, we need a major rethink of the way rich countries like New Zealand approach trade agreements, so that the real development needs of Pacific Island nations are prioritised.
- More and Better Aid: Sixteen out of the 22 OECD donor countries have fulfilled their commitment to giving 0.7% of national income in overseas aid or have timetables for doing so. New Zealand is not among them. Our government must set a timetable for reaching the 0.7% target.
- Drop the Debt: New Zealand must use its voice within international financial institutions, such as the IMF and the World Bank, to ensure that 100% of the debt of the most impoverished countries is cancelled without harmful conditions.
We are also calling for an end to child poverty here in New Zealand. In a country as wealthy as New Zealand, there is no excuse for failing to provide all children with the basic necessities of life - a warm, dry place to live, a healthy diet, medical care and adequate schooling. We need a plan to be put in place that will ensure that all children have these things, regardless of whether their parents are in paid work or not.
As my local MP I would like you to take the following action:
- Raise the issues in caucus
- Wear a white band to show your support for the campaign
I urge you, as my MP, to rise to the challenge and take action on poverty now.
Thank you.
